South Hill Bottle Depot and Hunting Hills High School benefit from beverage container recycling industry grant

Red Deer, Alberta...New beverage container recycling bins are now in place at Hunting Hills High School in Red Deer, thanks to a Recycling Infrastructure Partnership (RIP) grant provided to South Hill Bottle Depot. The $15,000 grant was awarded to South Hill to purchase the recycling containers and place them in the school of over 1,400 students. The school will retain the proceeds from the beverage containers collected.

South Hill Bottle Depot owner Greg Schultz initiated the application for the RIP grant. “While attending a sporting event at the school I noticed a large number of beverage containers in the trash so I approached the school with the idea of applying for the grant,” said Schultz. “I worked with Hunting Hills’ environmental club and we determined that recycling containers in the classrooms and common areas would benefit both the school and the environment.”

The RIP program is specifically designed for use by Alberta’s depot operators and since it began in 2011, over $2M worth of new beverage container recycling infrastructure has been placed in communities across the province.  This has resulted in the collection and recycling of over 21 million beverage containers.
